There is a stretch of eight hours between PST and GMT time zones. This gap is narrowed during the summer months to seven hours when Daylight Saving Time is in effect for the Pacific zone. There is a massive distance of 5,437 miles between Los Angeles and London for example, two locations within these zones.
To convert from one to the other, you must remember that the Pacific time zone has an offset of UTC -08:00 and the Greenwich zone has an offset of UTC 00:00. So, to convert from one to the other, you must add eight hours to the Pacific Time in order to reach Greenwich Time. Here’s an example:
If it is 1:00 PM in Pacific Time, then it would be 9:00 PM in Greenwich Time. If you’d rather not do the math, you can always refer to this page for up-to-date live clocks that show the time difference, and our handy chart which has conversions for each hour of the day.
Pacific Standard Time
There are five total U.S. states within this time zone: California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho. Some are partially within the zone, others fully. The first two are completely within Pacific Time, while the others are partially within the zone or have small portions that are not.
In Canada, this zone encompasses British Columbia for the most part, in addition to several other territories:
Greenwich Mean Time
While it is not offset from Coordinated Universal Time at all, GMT is a timezone that several countries have chosen as their legal civil time. These countries include the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, and Canada. It is used year-round in Iceland but only in the Winter in for the UK and Ireland.
During the summer months, British Summer Time is used, also known as Greenwich Daylight Saving Time, or GDT. This time standard is also used as the primary one for the International Space Station.
