An oasis in the desert is a fairy tale concept that is brought to life in many locations around the world. While they are sometimes viewed as desert mirages, these 10 oases are the real deal.

Defined as areas of lush vegetation surrounded by desert, these almost fantasy locations are truly a sight to behold, and a beacon in otherwise dangerous places to live. Check out our picks for 10 fairy tale oases around the world!

1. Chebika Oasis, Tunisia

This oasis can be found at the bottom of the Djebel el Negueb Mountains. Its name in Arabic means “Castle of the Sun.” An interesting fact: this was also the location where many scenes of Star Wars Episode IV were filmed.

2. Crescent Moon Lake, China

This unique oasis in Dunhuang, China is known for the lake that is shaped like a crescent moon. Those who journey to this desert oasis are often tourists. There are ATV rides and camel tours as well. While the lake’s depths have been receding in recent years, it’s still something everyone should see.

3. Ein Gedi, Israel

This oasis is located west of the Dead Sea, near Masada and the Qumran caves. It was given the status of a natural reserve in 1971 by the state. It is home to four different water springs: Nahal David, Nahal Arugot, Shulamit, and Ein Gedi.

This location is also the home to the Dead Sea Half Marathon, also known as the Shalom Marathon.

4. Huacachina Oasis, Peru

This oasis is located in the Ica region of Peru. The entire population is just a couple hundred people. Locals treat it as a resort and tourists have begun flocking to the area as well. Sports like sand boarding and dune buggies are popular attractions here.

5. Liwa Oasis, UAE

This region is surrounded by both villages and farms. They all surround the edge of Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter. The landscapes here, much like the rest of the UAE, are exquisite and beautiful in both their design and placement.

This is yet another national park, designated by the government of Brazil. It is located just outside the Amazon Basin. During the beginning of the year, this region receives a lot of rainfall, which creates the gorgeous lagoon you see in the picture above, and many others.

As such, this is yet another major tourist attraction.

7. Siwa Oasis, Egypt

This oasis is located a mere 31 miles from the Libyan border. You’ll find olive trees, palm trees, and mud-brick hamlets. You’ll find an equal amount of motorbikes and donkey-drawn carts.

8. Tafilalt, Morocco

This is one of the largest oases in the world. It’s located in the Saharah desert region of Morocco. The region is located along the banks of the Ziz River. The entire area is also known for its excellent dates.

9. Turpan, China

Turpan also goes by Tulufan. It’s an oasis city in the Xinjiang Uygur region of China. The area is historically significant for being near the ruins of Jiaohe city, which was destroyed by Genghis Khan.

The area has a cold desert climate with extremely hot summers and short bitter winters.

10. Ubari Oasis, Libya

Our final oasis is located near the Fezzan region. It is part of the Erg Awbari in the Sahara. The water acts as a central point for trading. Locals gather at the edges of the lake to sell souvenirs and other goods.
